Gymnasium
A Master Plan and Gymnasium design was developed for the Buxton School. The high building is cut into the hillside with a basketball court on the lower level and a student center above. Adjustable sun shades moderate light from the expansive southern windows. An integrated stairway and ramp form a sculptural element that crouches in the corner of the big space. The building is dramatically spanned by a single huge truss. It is feasible that the students could assemble the truss on-site, fabricating the components and bolting them together. Students constructing the backbone of their gymnasium would have a lasting and iconic effect in the life of the school.
